Geology and Soils:

Birtle is located within the uplands of the Riding Mountain escarpment.
The town is entirely underlain by cretaceous hard and soft-greenish shale of the Riding Mountain formation. Overlaying this are glacial deposits of powdered rock and rock fragments, interbedded clay, and till deposits which were deposited by the continental ice sheets. These glacial deposits are between 60 and 100 metres thick and form the parent material.
The surface deposits in Birtle consist of glacial till deposits, glaciofluvial deposits.
