Birtle has been entered in the Communities in Bloom competition since 1999 when they won the provincial competition.  Birtle then won national titles in 2000 and 2001 and have continued to participate since then.  In 2007, Birtle was again awarded 5 blooms. In 2008 and 2009 we entered a non-evaluated category.

Birtle Community in Bloom- 2008

-With the help of local volunteers, 39 spruce trees were planted in the Birtle Cemetery. Trees were also planted in the campground and Birtle Arboretum.
-The Heritage mural on the side of the Drop-In Centre was finished. This mural depicts the area known as Ravine Road as it was in 1895. Plans are underway to have a story board on display to identify landmarks.
-Shrubs and fruit bearing trees, along with other heritage plants that would have been grown and appreciated by our ancestors were used in the landscaping at “The Spring”-A Heritage Site. On display is a Red River Cart that was built by Laurie Davison. It was built true to character with no metal parts and is a wonderful addition to the park.
-Communities in Bloom partnered with the Birtle Ag Society and local heavy horse breeders to purchase a statue/fountain for the Town Square.

This is a fitting tribute as Birtle has been declared the Heavy Horse Capital of Canada

Town of Birtle - 5 Bloom Community

The town of Birtle, nestled in the lovely Birdtail valley, borders the Parkland region of western Manitoba with its deciduous forests of trembling aspen and bur oak interspersed with mixed grass prairie.

The natural woodlands that make up this beautiful community provide a perfect setting for the Birtle Municipal Park featuring golf, tennis, swimming and camping. The park provides access to hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails through lovely flora and fauna along the Birdtail valley.  Enjoy canoeing down the Birdtail River as it meanders through the community where wildlife abounds along its banks.

Birtle began at a freshwater spring on the Fort Ellice Trail in the 1870’s and quickly sprung up as a vibrant, agricultural community. Step into Birtle’s past when you visit the Birdtail Country Museum or take a heritage walking tour as you view turn of the century homes and historic markers at places of interest.

Birtle's many spectacular zone 2 gardens will surprise and delight you. Good soil, plentiful sunshine and rainfall have given local gardeners all they need to create a variety of beautiful public and private gardens, many of which are open for touring all summer long.

Our motto, Scenery, Serenity and Safety tells why the quality of life in Birtle is foremost in the minds of the people who make up this scenic valley community with its rolling landscapes stretching out in all directions. Visit this beautiful and progressive community that is blooming with pride and community spirit. The natural beauty of this prairie community beckons you to stay and make Birtle more than just a place to visit.
